The series «Introspection: Somnium» is also part of the second cycle of the project «Always Right». It consists of digital collages created through a montage of different materials: fragments from the duo’s archive, photographs from the research process, as well as digitally generated forms and color spaces.
Somnium—the dreamlike—is understood by the artist duo as a sequence of intermediate states. Within these, mental and emotional confrontations of the so-called self emerge as lucid moods. These moods form disharmonic relationships with one another which, in their entirety, nevertheless generate a coherent, multi-layered structure—comparable to a polyphonic body of sound.
Each collage is, at the same time, a call for silence. This is unheard of: how can a visual work claim to be perceived acoustically by demanding quiet? Yet an introspection into the realm of dreams and traumas presupposes precisely this silence. From it arise those unsettling tones and signals that articulate messages we want to understand, believe we understand—and perhaps will never fully comprehend.
The resulting volume is not noise, but a powerful composition of those voices that emerge from the aforementioned intermediate states and seek to overcome their confrontations. The linguistic and musical syntax of these signals interweaves, is transcribed into graphic symbols, and shaped into rhythmic compositions.
